" Young Cupid was stealing honey from a hive when a bee stung
the thief on the finger. So it is for us: the brief and fleeting pleasure
we seek is mingled with sadness and brings us pain"

Lucas Cranach the Elder, Cupid Complaining to Venus c. 1525

Truer words could not reverberate in a way that reaches my soul,
as this does. Even without analysis, this painting made two things apparent to me.
The child like tendency of unconditional love we seek,
and the reckless infatuation we often cannot help but encourage or welcome.
